The fable on which this illustration is based is part of 'The book of imaginary beings' by Jorge Luis Borges and Margarita Guerrero, entitled 'The Pelican'.
On page 46 of this document you can find the entire fable, where, in its final sentence, we can see the words that inspired the design of the pelican:
"He loves his children very much, and finding them in the nest killed by snakes, he tears his chest and, bathing them with his blood, brings them back to life".

La fábula en la cual se basa esta ilustración, forma parte de 'El libro de los seres imaginarios' de Jorge Luis Borges y Margarita Guerrero, titulada 'El pelícano'.
En la página 46 de este documento se puede encontrar la fábula íntegra, donde, en su frase final, podemos ver las palabras que sirvieron de inspiración para diseñar al pelícano:
«Quiere mucho a sus hijos, y hallándolos en el nido muertos por las serpientes, se desgarra el pecho y, bañándolos con su sangre, los vuelve a la vida».
